Stanford Quads

Square Dance Club

Class Overview

What sort of square dancing
will I learn?

We hold a class each year, usually starting in October. This is a fast-paced class which, unlike most in the area, emphasizes All Position Dancing (APD) from the very start. This class is suitable for complete beginners, but may also be of interest to current dancers seeking more experience with APD as well as returning dancers who want a complete review of all of the calls from Basic, Mainstream and Plus.

Notable Features

  • No previous dance experience assumed.
  • Covers through Plus (the program most common in this area).
  • Includes All Position Dancing.
  • You do not need to come with a partner.
  • Couples, singles, families all welcome.
  • No special clothing required.

For new dancers interested in taking more than one class

The class meets Sunday evenings from 7pm to 9pm. We held introductory sessions 2, 9, and 16 October for people with no previous experience with square dancing. We are now introducing new calls each week, building on what was taught in earlier weeks. People who have some comparable previous experience (currently dancing GDP or Mainstream, or previously danced Plus and still mostly remember the calls) may still be able to join the class at a later point -- let us know if you are interested and we can discuss your situation. Because this is a fast-paced class, after the intro sessions regular attendance is expected.

Starting in November, most weeks we also offer an additional review session starting at 6:30pm; this is open to all class members, but is especially recommended to anybody who missed the previous week. Following the class session, starting at 9pm, we have tips for experienced dancers (which class members are welcome to stay and watch).

The cost (after the intro sessions) is $8/week/person, with a discount available for pre-payment.

The number of weeks varies from year to year, depending on the mix of students.
